Trip to Heidelberg

On July 4th 2010 we went to Heidelberg with the trainees who were living in Kaiserslautern at that time. Fortunately all of the trainees participated, so that we had a multicultural group of four trainees and five AIESECers of the local committee Kaiserslautern.

At nine o’clock in the morning we met the trainees Alanna (Canada), Sonia (Tunisia), Mikolaj and Olga (both from Poland) at the main station of Kaiserslautern where the trip began. After one hour of traveling in the train a pigeon hit the electricity supply of the train.
As a result the train was damaged and needed to be replaced thus we had to catch another one. At first we were shocked but after a few minutes we laughed about it and realized one thing: ‘Every time you plan a journey something crazy will happen.’ About one hour later with a delay of thirty minutes we arrived at the main station of Heidelberg. In Heidelberg we met Klaus, a funny guy who guided us through the city. We started at the castle of Heidelberg which is very beautiful and full of history. Besides this it offers you an awesome view over the city. Briefly after the guided tour became clear that Klaus is more like an entertainer than a guide. He only told us the funniest and craziest stories about the castle. We all were happy that he didn’t bore us with too many facts, names and numbers. The tour continued and ended in the older part of the city which is also very impressive and unique.
After the tour we went to an old and traditional student’s pub where we had typical German food. This was especially interesting for Alanna and Sonia who didn’t know much about sausages and pickled cabbage. And of course some of us enjoyed some German beer too. After the lunch we visited the museum of the university. The University of Heidelberg is the oldest one in Germany where a lot of important and successful people graduated and made their studies. Among these people are also a lot of noble price winners. In addition we had a look at the former student’s prison that is a unique specialty of Heidelberg. This was amazing and at the same time the last cultural part of our trip and so we decided to enjoy the beautiful weather by sitting outside and having a drink. In the evening we went back to Kaiserslautern and fortunately no pigeon tried to stop us.

To sum up I have to say that we really had a great time and a lot of fun. Furthermore we all had the opportunity to experience the multicultural part and the diversity of AIESEC and I’m sure all of us enjoyed it.
