Trip to the Christmas market in Trier

For our Buddy-Newie Project we organized a trainee-trip to the Christmas market in Trier. The trip took place on the 19.12.2009, the coldest day of the year, -18°C!! We were happy that 14 people participated on this excursion, 2 of them were trainees, Flora from Ghana and Roxana from Peru. Before we went to the Christmas market we made a sightseeing tour. Trier is known as the oldest city of Germany and was founded around 2000 years ago by the Romans. Therefore you can visit some old ancient Roman buildings.

At first we visited the Porta Nigra, which was the former west gate of Trier and was used to protect the city from invasions. Fortunately we had Christoph with us, who studies archaeology in Trier, so he could give us some interesting information about the historical buildings of Trier. From the top of the Porta Nigra we had an awesome view over the city. Our next stop should be the Kaisertherme but on our way we lost Flora. She wanted to buy some socks :) . We didn't know in which shop she went so we split up in two groups.

One group went to the Kaisertherme, while the others were looking for Flora. Fortunately they found her quickly, so we all could get together for visiting the Dome of Trier. After this we all enjoyed the Christmas Market, where we had a couple drinks of yummy hot wine! After 8 hours of freezing we started our way back. We actually wanted to be back in Kaiserslautern at 10pm but on our way we had some problems. Because of the coldness our train wasn't able to drive, so we had to wait one hour to continue our ride, so we finally arrived Kaiserslautern at 11pm. All in all it was a nice day and a good experience. The best thing was to get to know better to the trainees from the other countries and learn more about their Christmas customs and their general culture.
